Roman ruins in Padua: Arena in Padua

The only witness left of Roman Padua, the arena today presents itself with the remains of the internal walls, once linked by means of vaults to another wall which supported the flights of steps.

On the outside of the building, on an elliptical plane, there are eighty arches. It dates from 60 to 70 A.D. in the Claudian and Flavian era.

Acquired in 1300 by the Scrovegni, it became an integral part of the family palace which also included the Chapel of the Annunciation: the palace was demolished in the Nineteenth Century, at which time it was the property of the Foscari family.

The arena or amphitheatre built outside the city walls was accompanied by the theatre or Zairo, also built outside the walls in the present Prato della Valle.
