| Hearth of Padua: Saint Sophia Church
Perhaps built on preexisting Paleochristian remains, which in turn were on the site of an important Roman building - the area was important as it was at the cross - road of three main highways - the Church of Saint Sophia apparently dates from the end of the year One Thousand, when the Venetian craftsmen bui[t the crypt, after which work stopped. At the beginning of the Twelfth Century the apse with deambu[atory was built.
This, today, is the most ancient part of the bui[ding, the facade of which is at an ang[e due to subsidence. It has a hut-like roof and doorway flanked by niches, copied from models found in the Venetian Lagoon. |
